The Winter Meetings are just about over. The annual Rule 5 draft starts at 9 a.m. Once that ends, people will flee the hotel as fast as they can.
The draft is of minor leaguers not on the 40-man roster with more than six years of service time, basically. If a team selects a player, they must keep him on the active roster all season or offer him back to the original club.
Theo Epstein said yesterday that he expected the Red Sox to lose a player or two. The Red Sox, he said, were considering whether to take anybody and if they did, it would likely be a pitcher.
We’ll keep you posted.
UPDATE, 9:14 a.m.: The Red Sox lost RHP Cesar Cabral (Rays) and Daniel Turpen (Yankees) in the Rule 5 draft.
Turpen was obtained from the Giants in the Ramon Ramirez trade.
