Red Sox round up the usual suspects

Round up the usual suspects.

Theo Epstein has taken a line from “Casablanca,” the legendary film his grandfather and great uncle wrote the screenplay for, by deciding to give lefty Lenny DiNardo another shot with the Sox. is reporting that DiNardo has agreed to a minor league deal pending a physical. DiNardo has a 5.36 ERA over six seasons. He was with the Red Sox from 2004-06, going 1-3 with a 5.53 ERA in 43 appearances as a reliever and spot starter.

Elbow surgery limited DiNardo to 12 minor-league appearances last season. The 30-year-old spent two seasons with Oakland under Curt Young, the new Red Sox pitching coach. He will likely provide depth in Pawtucket, perhaps even as a starter.

The Red Sox also are discussing a possible deal with righthanded reliever Dan Wheeler, a Rhode Island native who has pitched effectively for Tampa Bay the last four seasons.

Wheeler, 33, has a 3.84 ERA in parts of 11 seasons with four teams. He was 2-4 with a 3.35 ERA in 64 appearances for the Rays last season.
