In case you missed it, the Rays have traded RHP Matt Garza and OF Fernando Perez to the Cubs for five prospects.
Garza is 7-4 with a 3.83 ERA in 19 career regular-season games against the Red Sox and owned them in the 2008 ALCS (13 IP, 2 ER, 14 K).
Success against him has been rare for the current cast of players. Check it out:
Mike Cameron: 0 for 9, 3 K
J.D. Drew: 4 for 34, 10 K
Adrian Gonzalez 0 for 3, 1 K
Jed Lowrie: 0 for 6, 2K
Dustin Pedroia 11 of 42, 3K (3 HR)
Jarrod Saltalamacchia: 1 for 8, 3 K
Jason Varitek: 4 for 27, 9 K
Kevin Youkilis 7 for 40, 9 K
David Ortiz is only 8 of 34, 12 K but does have four home runs. Marco Scutaro has actually him pretty well (14 of 49), too. Garza has one of the best fastballs in baseball and when he’s throwing it for strikes, he’s devastating. Garza is one of those guys who leaves the hitters muttering to themselves later on.
Keep in mind, however, that the Cubs come to Fenway for three games in May.
And don’t be quick to throw dirt on the Rays. They got RHP Chris Archer, OF Brandon Guyer, C Robinson Chirinos, SS Hak-Ju Lee and OF Sam Fuld in the deal. Lee could be their shortstop for a long time and Archer is a guy who throws 95.
Even without Garza, the Rays will have David Price, Jeff Niemann, Wade Davis and Jeremy Hellickson in their rotation along with James Shields.
