Youkilis steps up for the real heroes

Kevin Youkilis doesn’t think athletes are heroes. In his mind, the real heroes are police, fire and military personnel, those who put their lives on the line for the benefit of someone else.

As part of his Youk’s Kids foundation, Kevin is starting Athletes for Heroes. The program will bring together athletes from Boston’s professional sports teams with children who have lost a parent or had a parent severely disabled in the line of duty.

The program will provide financial assistance to meet the needs of these children, including assisting with sporting program costs, educational, and other needs. The goal of Athletes for Heroes is to inspire those children to look beyond current obstacles, providing opportunities these children may not otherwise have access to and motivating them to determine their own future.

Youk has already signed up Ray Allen, Wes Welker, Shawn Thornton and Taylor Twellman to help him.

The program will launch with an event at the State Room on Thursday.

The Dropkick Murphys, Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, Ayla Brown, Jordan Knight and comedians Mike O’Malley, Lenny Clarke and Tony V will be among those on hand for “Not Your Average Idol.”

In addition to the performances, the event will feature a silent and live auction as well as food tastings from many of Boston’s top restaurants. Tickets for the event are $250 and can be purchased online at or by calling 617-946-9685 (YOUK).
