FORT MYERS, Fla. — Good morning from Fort Myers, Fla., where a(nother) warm and sunny day has greeted the Red Sox for their workouts at the Player Development Complex.
These will be last days the Sox will be spending at this facility, as they anticipate moving into new digs next year closer to the airport here Fort Myers
The Sox will commence spring training games with a double-header Saturday at City of Palms Park against Boston College at 1 p.m and Northeastern at 6 p.m.
One veteran told me he doesn’t particularly care to play in these exhibitions against the eager collegians. “Almost got hit in the head by one of them last year,” he said.
Some observations from a first-timer to Fort Myers:
Upon meeting Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a 6-foot-4-inch, 235-inch specimen, for the first time you come to realize that he is the only one in the Sox club with shoulders broad enough — save, perhaps, for Bobby Jenks — to wear his multi-syllabic name across the back of his jersey.
Shoe company representatives were in the clubhouse today, which must have felt like Christmas Day to several of their clients, including Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, who poured through different styles of baseball cleats. With so many styles to choose from, Crawford, an Air Jordan guy, joked, “I’m like a woman going through a shopping mall.”
We’ll get back with some more once workouts conclude and we’ve had a chance to chat with Terry Francona.
