Seven pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Sox improved to 2-1. Mike Cameron and Juan Carlos Linares each had two hits.

The Sox have scored two more runs. Linares had an RBI double.

Top of the 9th: Red Sox 3, Twins 0

Tony Pena Jr. put two runners on base but got through the inning. The Sox will turn the lead over to Matt Fox in the bottom of the inning.

Middle of the 8th: Red Sox 3, Twins 0

Juan Carlos Linares singled, took third on an error and scored on an RBI single by Paul Hoover. Tony Pena Jr. in for the bottom of the inning.


Top of the 8th: Red Sox 2, Twins 0

From the mean streets of Milton, Rich Hill held the Twins down as he worked around a walk. We go to the 8th inning.

Bottom of the 7th: Red Sox 2, Twins 0

Rich Hill now in. The Red Sox are working on a two-hit shutout. This is the best Mayor’s Cup game I have seen since yesterday.

Injury update: Dlugach dislocates shoulder

AAA infielder Brent Dlugach was injured in the fifth inning when he made a diving play charging a bunt. Dlugach caught the ball but dislocated his left shoulder. Trainer Mike Reinold was able to pop the shoulder back in and Dlugach will have further exams later today and tomorrow.

Top of the 7th: Red Sox 2, Twins 0

Randy Williams pitched a scoreless inning for the Sox.

Top of the 6th: Red Sox 2, Twins 0

Jonathan Papelbon had a 1-2-3 inning, throwing six pitches. But AAA infielder Brent Dlugach injured his left shoulder making a diving play on a ball at third base. He had to be taken out of the game.

Bottom of the 5th: Red Sox 2, Twins 0

Sorry for the delay, but had to run down to the clubhouse to interview Jon Lester. He felt fine, by the way.


As for the Sox, Scutaro doubled to open the fifth inning. Pinch runner Jose Iglesias scored on a single by Jed Lowrie, who went to third on an error. But he was stranded.

Aceves left two runners stranded in the bottom of the inning. His line: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.

Top of the 4th: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

Nice inning for Aceves, who got three grounders. Nishioka tried to bunt and Youkilis threw him out. Kevin looks very comfortable at third base.

Aceves threw 16 pitches, 11 strikes. He has really impressed the Sox in camp and added to that today.

Middle of the 3rd: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

Mike Cameron (2 for 2) had another hit. But that was it for that inning. Aceves in to pitch.

Top of the 3rd: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

Solid spring debut for Lester: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. 27 pitches, 19 strikes.

He walked Benson to start that inning. Parmelee then fanned looking after fouling off three two-strike pitches. Toscini flied to left and Butera to center.

Middle of the 2nd: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

Ryan Kalish was working on his bunting this morning at City of Palms. So guess what happened? He started the inning with a bunt single.

Darnell McDonald was hit by a pitch before Salty flied to deep center and Kalish took third Reddick’s sac fly made it 1-0. Drew Sutton walked before Scutaro grounded to second.

Top of the 2nd: Red Sox 0, Twins 0

Lester got Span and Nishioka on grounders to first. Valencia singled to left before Thome took a mighty cut and flied to center. 11 pitches, 8 strikes for the big lefty.


Middle of the 1st: Red Sox 0, Twins 0

Scutaro grounded to first and Lowrie flied to left before Cameron singled to center. With Cameron on the move, Youkilis grounded to short.

Lester headed to the mound.

Pre-game: Red Sox vs. Twins

It’s a bit muggy and 79 degrees here in the Sunshine State. There’s word of a storm rolling in but the game is starting on time. Oddly, the teams are playing for the third time in as many days.
