FORT MYERS, Fla. — Righthander Casey Kelly threw a scoreless inning for the Padres yesterday in Peoria, Ariz. It was his spring debut with the team.
Kelly was one of the four players the Red Sox traded to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez and was the linchpin of the deal. Facing the Rockies, Kelly worked around a one-out error by fielding a bunt himself and getting Dexter Fowler to fly to center. Eric Patterson, who also was in the trade, caught the ball to end the inning.
The Padres are expecting to start Kelly in AA ball this season. Casey was one of the prospects I got to know a little last season and he’s a player you should root for.
In other ex-Sox news, the Rangers announced today that Adrian Beltre will miss more time than expected with a strained calf but should be ready for Opening Day.
