Tony Pena Jr. allowed three runs in the ninth before Eamon Portice came in and got Ramiro Pena to ground out. Oscar Tejada made an excellent play to end the game, perhaps with the assistance of first base umpire Marty Foster. But it’s all good in spring training.

Top of the 9th: Red Sox 4, Yankees 1

We go to the final inning. Excellent work by the Sox pitchers, who have allowed five hits.

Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, Yankees 1

Matt Albers held the lead, thanks in part to a great play by Iglesias. The kid is having a terrific night.


Middle of the 7th: Red Sox 4, Yankees 1

Jose Iglesias, who has been on base three times, singled with two outs off Boone Logan. After McDonald walked, Juan Carlos Linares singled in a run. Oscar Tejada then ripped a two-run triple of Eric Wordkemper.

Top of the 7th: Red Sox 1, Yankees 1

Doubles by Teixeira and Cano tied it. The Yankees had a chance for more but Jones lined into a double play as Tejada snapped the ball up. The teams have subbed out pretty much all of their starters.

Middle of the 6th: Red Sox 1, Yankees 0

Lowrie doubled and pinch runner Oscar Tejada scored on a single by Nava that glanced off the glove of a diving Cano.

Top of the 6th: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

Brandon Duckworth allowed a two-out single by Jeter but that was it. The team each have three hits. In other news, the Red Sox press corps waited for an elevator with Richard Gere. No sign of the Dalai Lama.

Middle of the 5th: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

The Sox missed a chance. Sutton doubled and Iglesias walked with two outs but McDonald struck out. The 19-year-old Banuelos is impressive.

Top of the 5th: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

Randy Williams worked around a one-out double by A-Rod. Cano grounded to second before Posada walked then Jones whiffed.


The line for Buchholz: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. 45 pitches, 24 strikes.

Top of the 4th: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

Buchholz got two outs before walking Golson and Jeter. But Martin helped out by swinging at the first pitch and lining to right.

Middle of the 3rd: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

Sutton and Iglesias has one-out singles. But Colon struck out McDonald and got Kalish to ground to first.

Top of the 3rd: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

A-Rod singled to left. Cano then drove a ball the same way and Josh Reddick went back to make a tremendous leaping catch. Posada followed and grounded to Iglesias, who touched second and threw to first to complete the double play.

Four innings, one hit and no runs in spring training for Buchholz.

Middle of the 2nd: Red Sox 0, Yankees

Bartolo Colon is partying like it’s 1999. The big fella retired the side in order again as Varitek grounded out, Nava struck out and Reddick lined to left.

Top of the 2nd: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

Easy inning for Buchholz as Jeter and Martin grounded to short and Teixeira struck out. It had to be kind of cool for Jose Iglesias, throwing out a player he admires in Jeter.

Bartolo Colon overpowered McDonald (6-3), Kalish (K) and Lowrie (K)

Pre-game: Richard Gere threw out the first pitch and threw a strike. Sellout crowd here at Steinbrenner Field and the team was selling standing room-only seats. … Check back later for updates.
