Game over: Orioles 4, Red Sox 3

That’s 10 losses in a row.

Top of the 9th: Orioles 4, Red Sox 3

Here’s why you can’t get too wrapped up in spring training results. The Sox were up 3-1 and took all of their regulars out. And because it was a day game after a night game, they had mostly minor leaguers available to pitch.

Santo Luis, who will probably be in Portland to start the season, started the inning and allowed five consecutive hits to Scott, Jones, Reynolds, Wieters and Hardy, all starters. Now the Sox are down.

Middle of the 8th: Red Sox 3, Orioles 1

The Sox are hanging on as Rice and Tommy Hottovy. Big Santo Luis is on the mound for this inning. The Orioles still have many of their starters in.

Middle of the 7th: Red Sox 3, Orioles 1

Sorry for the lack of updates, had to spend a little time in the clubhouse. Dennys Reyes worked around a leadoff walk and a single. Jason Rice then navigated though the sixth.

The Sox have subbed out most of the regulars.

Paul Hoover singled and scored on a triple by Drew Sutton. In the bottom of the inning, Albers allowed a single by Scott. Daniel Turpen, the Rule 5 pick returned by the Yankees, got the final two outs of the inning.

Top of the 4th: Red Sox 2, Orioles 1

Scutaro (2 for 2) singled and rode home when Drew homered to left. Matt Albers allowed a run on two its and two walks in the bottom of the inning but got Vlad Guerrero to ground to third with the bases loaded and two outs.

Top of the 3rd: Red Sox 0, Orioles 0

Ortiz singled to start the second but McDonald went 6-4-3. Spears (“Spears is going to play in the big leagues. He’s going to find his way to the big leagues,” Francona said before the game) walked but Hoover grounded back to the mound.

Duckworth retired the side in order.

Top of the 2nd: Red Sox 0, Orioles 0

Scutaro singled with one out then was thrown out trying to advance on a pitch Wieters dropped. Drew walked then Youkilis struck out.

Duckworth got a double play ball from Lee to end the bottom of the inning. He was reassigned to the minors a few days ago but is here pitching in Lester’s place.

Pre-game: Good afternoon from sunny Sarasota and renovated (and beautiful) Ed Smith Stadium. It’ll be Brandon Duckworth against Chris Tillman as the Sox try and avoid another loss.

According to the Red Sox notes, the nine-game spring training losing streak is a record. Bill Nowlin provided that information to the Sox.

The game is on NESN and WEEI but we’ll have updates here and feel free to leave your comments.
