Packing day for the Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. — There five times as many empty boxes and duffel bags in the clubhouse this morning as there were players.

The 25-man roster was busy packing up twice. One box was headed to Fenway Park with everything for their lockers. Then there was an equipment bag to pack for the coming seven-game road trip that starts with an exhibition game in Houston tomorrow night. Plus the players have carry-on bags for the plane.

Nate Spears is headed to Houston as a reward for his excellent spring. The 25-year-old career minor leaguer was busy this morning getting his teammates to sign his spring training jersey.

“That’s going up in my house,” the Fort Myers native said. “What a great experience this spring was for me.”

Spears, who was signed as a minor-league free agent before last season, has played all over the field and impressed the coaches.

“Spears is going to find his way to the big leagues,” Terry Francona said the other day. “He deserves to be here. He’s worked as hard as anybody in camp, he’s about as good a kid as you’re ever going to find and the coaches love him.”
