Former 1st round pick released

Checked with the Red Sox to confirm a report by soxprospects.com and indeed the team has released OF Jason Place, their first-round pick in the 2006 draft.

Place came out of Wren High in Piedmont, S.C., with lofty expectations and received a $1.3 million bonus. He had speed, excellent power and a strong arm. But over five seasons with the Sox, he hit .234/.315/.390 and never got above Class AA Portland.

Place is only 22 so perhaps he’ll get a shot with somebody else. But five years is a long time to show what you can do.
