NESN’s Peter Gammons tweeted that the Red Sox have called on veteran pitcher Kevin Millwood to ask whether he would be willing to go to Pawtucket and work his way to Boston if needed.
Millwood was released by the Yankees a couple of weeks ago when his velocity didn’t impress the Yankee brass enough. The Yankees didn’t think Millwood could consistently get major league hitters out.
The Sox will need to replenish their pitching depth with both John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka on the DL with elbow ailments. Both Tim Wakefield and Alfredo Aceves are now in the starting rotation and there isn’t much at Pawtucket. I’ll have more on Boston’s pitching depth problems in tomorrow’s Globe.
Gammons also tweeted that Scott Boras, who represents Matsuzaka, is having a second opinion set up on his elbow which could have some ligament damage.
