DETROIT — Here is what Terry Francona had to say to reporters this morning in his office:
On Darnell McDonald’s injury: “We pinch ran him [on Tuesday] for David [Ortiz]. We put him in yesterday and it got a little bit worse. It’s not real bad. Saying that, we don’t have J.D. [Drew] for today and the next … we’re a little short. So we put him on disabled list. We’ll get back to where he’s feeling real good and get him down [in the minors] playing a few games and then make some decisions. We just were getting a little thin.”
On Josh Reddick: “He had gotten real hot. He’s hitting the ball to left field, he’s got some home runs. Sounds like he’s seeing a lot more pitches per at-bat, which is exciting. The reports are actually pretty good, Sounds like he’s starting to understand his swing a little bit. Think he always went through some periods when he got real hot and he’d get real cold. It sounds like he’s a getting a little bit better understanding.”
On Lowrie not playing and Drew Sutton at shortstop: “With the travel and the back to back day games, he’s played about 20 in a row, Think it will be a really good day to let him [rest]. Sut swung the bat good yeterday. Let him run around out there and see if he can help us.”
(Lowrie had actually played 12 games in a row. But that’s OK.)
On Kevin Youkilis being back: “He was confident last night that he would be OK.”
On Bobby Jenks: “Bobby’s going to go pitch an inning tomorrow in Pawtucket. He’ll throw an inning tomorrow, keep it around 20-25 [pitches], certainly no more than that. Then come back Sunday and pitch again.
On John Lackey: “Lack’s going to throw tomorrow in the bullpen. Kind of a simulated [game]. Hitters, up and down, and get ready for his Tuesday outing [in Pawtucket].”
