DETROIT — Good morning from the Dick McAuliffe International Airport here in Detroit.
So my phone rang at 4:30 a.m. and it was a nice lady from American Airlines. My 6:55 a.m. flight to Chicago was delayed and I would miss my connection to Boston. But I could get re-booked onto a 6 a.m. to LaGuardia and catch a flight to Boston there.
I wasn’t sure if it was a computer or a person at first. Then the lady said, “Are you there, Mr. Abraham?”
I was and I told her to book me on the 6 a.m. flight. I would make it.
A quick shower later and I was out of the airport hotel, onto a shuttle and over to the North Terminal. Everything was going well until a group of — literally — seven people were in the bag drop line without boarding passes. This slowed the line to a crawl and people started to get restless.
Then out from the back came The Very Efficient Airline Employee With A No-Nonsense Attitude. She whipped everybody into shape, throwing the dopes out of the line, getting people checked in on the kiosks and making sure everything ran smoothly. She even printed out a few bag tags herself.
Those of us who travel a lot love these people. I wanted to hug her.
So, boom, bag checked, through security (always get behind the airline crew members) and to the gate. I even had time for this blog post. Not bad.
So off to New York and back home. The road trip is over and a couple of days off beckon.
