PHILADELPHIA — Terry Francona was asked again today about whether he will start Adrian Gonzalez in right field so David Ortiz can start a game or two at first base this week.
“I don’t know,” he said.
Theo Epstein is here and will be part of the discussions.
“I owe it to Theo to talk to him about it, being really honest about it. If something ever went wrong. … ,” Francona said. “We’ve talked about it ad nauseam. We’ll talk about it a little bit more.”
It’s worth noting that Ortiz took some grounders at first base today. The fact the Sox haven’t ruled it out with five games left means it’s still a possibility. Tomorrow against Phillies RHP Vance Worley would certainly make sense.
“I’m banging my head over it a little bit,” Francona said. “I want Theo to say OK so I can blame him.”
Francona certainly understands how tough this is on Ortiz.
“I’m not any more happy about this than he is. I think it’s awful,” he said. “I just don’t know what to do. He understands it, too. I don’t blame him for not being happy. He’s having a great year and he’s not playing. That’s awful.”
