Game over: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 2
The Red Sox wrapped up the second game of this series with a 3-2 victory despite losing starting pitcher Jon Lester to a strained lat muscle after four no-hit innings.
The Red Sox (50-35) have won five of their last six games and will wrap up this series Wednesday night.
Top of the 9th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Papelbon entered the game.
Patterson led off with a single. Jose Bautista cranked a 2-and-1 pitch over the Wall for a two-run homer. Papelbon came back to strike out Lind. Encarnacion singled to center. Snider drove the ball to deep left field but McDonald was there for the catch. Arencibia walked to give the Blue Jays runners on first and second with two outs.
McDonald hit a single to left field but McDonald charged and launched the perfect throw to Varitek, who was waiting at the plate. Varitek blocked the plate and made the tag to end the game.
Bottom of the 8th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Hill stayed in the game for the Blue Jays at second base. Thames also stayed in the game and played right field. Snider moved from right to center.
Pedroia flew out to right. Ortiz struck out swinging on a 3-and-2 pitch. McDonald reached on a single to center. Varitek flied to right to end the inning.
Top of the 8th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Daniel Bard enters the game. Morales didn’t give up a run or a hit in his one inning of work.
Arencibia struck out. McDonald singled to right. Hill pinch hit for McCoy and flew out to left. Eric Thames pinch hit for Davis and also lined out to left as McDonald made two nice grabs back to back.
Bottom of the 7th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Cecil has settled down since the Red Sox scored in the second and third. He worked his way out of a couple of jams and in the seventh got Ellsbury and Scutaro to ground out and struck out Gonzalez.

UPDATE: The Red Sox announce Lester has a left lat strain.
Franklin Morales enters the game. Albers pitched two innings, allowing one hit. He struck out two and walked two and didn’t give up a run.
Lind flew out to left. Encarnacion popped out. Snider flew out to center.
Bottom of the 6th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Ortiz walked to start the inning. McDonald flied out to right. Varitek flied out to center. Drew walked. Navarro’s grounder to short gave Toronto an easy force out at second to end the inning.
Top of the 6th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
McCoy was thrown out on a dribbler to short. Davis attempted to catch the Red Sox off guard with a bunt, but Varitek scooped it up and threw him out at first. Patterson walked. Bautista picked up the first hit of the night for Toronto with a single to left.
With Lind at the plate, Albers caught Patterson attempting to steal third to end the inning.
Bottom of the 5th: Blue Jays 0, Red Sox 3:
Navarro grounded out. Ellsbury struck out on a check swing. Scutaro singled to left on a 2-and-2 pitch. Gonzalez singled to center for his first hit of the night, giving the Red Sox runners at first and second with two outs. Pedroia flied out to end the inning.
Top of the 5th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
RHP Matt Albers relieves Lester to start the inning. Lester struck out five, walked one, and didn’t allow a hit or a run in four innings. He threw 50 pitches and 35 were strikes. There is no word of an injury just yet.
Encarnacion and Snider both struck out swinging. Arencibia walked. McDonald grounded to short.
Bottom of the 4th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
SCORING UPDATE: Upon further review, Drew’s hit in the second was changed from an error to a single and he was credited with an RBI.
In the fourth, McDonald grounded out. Varitek struck out. Drew grounded out to end the inning.
Top of the 4th: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Patterson hit a grounder back to Lester, who knocked it down and threw him out at first. Bautista flew out to deep center field. Lind struck out looking to end the inning.
Bottom of the 3rd: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
Scutaro flew out to center. Gonzalez struck out swinging.
Pedroia pulled a 1-and-2 pitch into the Monster seats for his eighth homer of the season. Ortiz flies to left to end the inning.
Top of the 3rd: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 0
The Blue Jays led off with a base runner as Arencibia walked. But the Blue Jays couldn’t take advantage. McDonald popped out. McCoy grounded out, and Davis flied out to end the inning.
Bottom of the 2nd: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 0:
David Ortiz led off the inning with a double to right and moved to third as Darnell McDonald grounded out. Jason Varitek doubled off of the top of the Green Monster to drive in Ortiz for the first run of the game.
Varitek scored when Blue Jays 2B Mike McCoy booted J.D. Drew’s grounder. McCoy was charged with an error and the run was unearned. Yamaico Navarro popped out to short and Ellsbury flied out to end the inning.
Top of the 2nd: Blue Jays 0, Red Sox 0
Adam Lind lined out to third. Edwin Encarnacion strikes out. Lester uses a 95-m.p.h. fastball to strike out Travis Snider to end the inning. Lester has struck out four of the first six batters.
Bottom of the 1st: Blue Jays 0, Red Sox 0
Jacoby Ellsbury grounded out to start the inning. Marco Scutaro flied out to shallow right field. Adrian Gonzalez reached base after Brett Cecil’s pitch plunked him on the arm. The pitch didn’t seem to harm Gonzalez. Dustin Pedroia struck out to end the inning.

We are here at Fenway Park for the 85th game of the season for the Red Sox. A little busy around here with the news of Mike Cameron being traded to Florida. But we’re underway on a comfortable night.
