Scratch that: Red Sox to option Weiland, call Sutton up tomorrow

Manager Terry Francona said this afternoon that the Red Sox planned to put J.D. Drew on the disabled list prior to tonight’s game, which would have cleared a roster spot for starting pitcher Jon Lester.

That plan has changed since the clubhouse closed at 6 p.m. Instead, Kyle Weiland was to be optioned to Triple A Pawtucket before Monday night’s game and that Drew will be put on the disabled list Tuesday, with Drew Sutton taking his place on the roster. The Red Sox announced these moves prior to tonight’s first pitch.

Sutton is hitting .299 with 5 home runs and 27 RBIs in 41 games for Pawtucket. In 26 games with the Red Sox this season, Sutton batted.298 with 7 doubles and 7 home runs.
