Pregame notes from Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Red Sox are “brainstorming” according to Terry Francona to try to figure out how to get in all three games against Oakland this weekend with a hurricane bearing down on New England.

The Athletics don’t have another series in Boston this season or return to the East Coast. There are no mutual off days, either. So if they don’t get three games in this weekend, they would have to do it on Sept. 29, the day before the playoffs start.

Nobody wants to do that.

According to the current weather reports, Hurricane Irene is supposed to arrive in New England later in the day on Saturday. So a doubleheader on Friday or Saturday might be needed.

As we get information on that, we’ll pass it on. As to baseball matters:

• Bobby Jenks threw a simulated game down in Florida and is ready to start a rehab assignment on Saturday. Where has not been determined.

• J.D. Drew left for home and is set to play for Lowell on Friday.

• Tim Wakefield and Jon Lester will head home early in the day tomorrow to get some rest. Wakefield starts Friday and Lester on Saturday.

• Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was in the clubhouse and met Francona along with several players.

• Kevin Youkilis is exercising, but has not started baseball activities. That could happen on Friday. Francona said he remains hopeful that Youk would be ready to go when his 15 days are up. That would be Sept. 2.
