Notes: The Sox embark on a seven-game road trip to Toronto and Tampa after an uninspiring 4-5 homestand. … The Sox start the day 1.5 games behind the Yankees in the division. … The Sox are 8-4 against the Jays this season, 3-2 at the Rogers Centre. … Toronto is 5-11 in its last 16 games. They are 3-7 in their last 10, all without manager John Farrell, who is recovering from pneumonia. … Beckett has never pitched well against Toronto. He is 4-6, 6.57 in 15 career starts; 1-2, 9.28 in six starts in Toronto. However, he allowed one run over seven innings against the Jays at Fenway on April 16. That was when the Sox starter their tear. They were 2-10 to that point and are 82-44 since. … Alvarez is a 21-year-old who started this season in Class A ball. He threw eight shutout innings in Baltimore in his last start, that coming on Aug. 31. He allowed three hits without a walk and struck out five.
Stat of the Day: Jacoby Ellsbury has 64 extra-base hits. In franchise history only three players who played at least 90 percent of their games in center field have had more. Fred Lynn (82 in 1979, 75 in 1975); Tris Speaker (75 in 1912, 68 in 1914) and Carl Everett (70 in 2000).
Song of the Day: “Working On The Highway” by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
