NEW YORK – The Red Sox have a similar version to their Saturday lineup except Conor Jackson will play right field in Game 1 of this scheduled day/night doubleheader..
Manager Terry Francona said Clay Buchholz was on a plane to Fort Myers to pitch an inning in an instructional league game. He would then be re-evaluated Tuesday and may pitch an inning or two with the major league team on Wednesday, the final day of the regular season.
Francona updated a few of the MASH unit guys. He said J.D. Drew took batting practice yesterday. We may see Drew in a game soon depending on how he felt today. It is unlikely he would play today.
No update on Kevin Youkilis, who play if he can tolerate the pain of his hernia.
Francona was asked if he’s had any correspondence with Sox owner John Henry during this stretch and he said he hadn’t.
Francona also was asked if there was any advantage to the Yankees being able to set up their rotation for the playoffs. He said, “I wish we were in that position.”
On the Yankee side, CC Sabathia threw a simulated game on the field this morning. He will not pitch the rest of the way so he can be set up for the playoffs and Game 1. Joe Girardi said he would have used Sabathia if the Yankees needed to win a game to win the division, but since that was wrapped up he’s able to rest his horse. That’s not great news for the Red Sox as Sabathia will not face the Rays this week.
Girardi said he didn’t forsee any situation where rookie DH/catcher Jesus Montero wouldn’t be on the postseason roster. He said he also expects big things from Jorge Posada because of his playoff experience.
Phil Hughes is expected to pitch a game in Tampa Bay.
