Red Sox captain Jason Varitek appeared on WAAF’s Hill Man Show this morning, and much of the Q&A focused on issues Varitek discussed in an interview with the Globe yesterday.
However, Varitek was asked about a report that some Red Sox players drank beer in the dugout during games this season, news that came after Varitek’s interview with the Globe ended.
Varitek said he was not aware of players drinking in the dugout.
“Absolutely not,” he said. “They’re saying an unnamed source … they don’t have people stepping out and saying ‘OK, it’s me, I’m saying it. These things happen.’ They don’t have that.”
Varitek also confirmed embattled pitcher John Lackey was not 100 percent healthy this season.
“He had to deal with a lot physically. Everybody’s making a big deal of what he had to do off the field. That’s not a part of it. That’s a part of his life, but it’s not part of him as a human being. He took the ball when he didn’t have to. … He wasn’t 100 percent.”
