Red Sox interested in Bobby Valentine

MILWAUKEE — Former Rangers and Mets manager Bobby Valentine had a telling “no comment” to Globe colleague Nick Cafardo earlier today when asked whether he had any interest in the Red Sox job.

But Valentine has long been on the periphery of their search and now he may be moving to the front.

Team sources say that the Red Sox have reached out to Valentine and discussed his interest in becoming manager. He could be the next candidate added to the search.

Valentine, 61, has 15 years of managerial experience in the majors and an additional six years in Japan.

Valentine would not come cheaply and it’s unclear whether his style would mesh with general manager Ben Cherington and the baseball operations department. But Valentine has the cachet and his hiring would certainly create a buzz.
