A few minor updates on the managerial situation:
• A team source says that Torey Lovullo has been eliminated from consideration.
• It will be either Gene Lamont or Bobby Valentine. No mystery candidate (John Farrell, Brad Mills, etc.) is in the running. So expect Lamont or Valentine to be named by the end of the week.
UPDATE, 5:50 p.m.: Just spoke to Gene Lamont. Here’s what he had to offer:
“I’m excited, a little antsy to be honest with you,” he said. “This has kind of dragged on. But it’s a good job. They have a good team and it’s a great place. I’d be lucky to get the job I guess there are two of us left and I’m glad to be one of them.”
When last he spoke to the Sox: “On Wednesday. I haven’t heard from them since. I’m anxious to hear back. I’m not sure what’s happening.”
On his meetings last week with John Henry (in Florida) and Tom Werner (in New York): “It went fine. I don’t know too many interviews when it doesn’t go well. I felt comfortable and they seemed like nice guys.”
So what happens now: “It’s just a matter of waiting. They’ll make the right decision and hopefully I’m the right guy to manage the Red Sox in 2012 and beyond.”
Bobby Valentine hasn’t heard from the Sox since last week, either. As we learn more, we’ll pass it along.
