This and that from the lobby

DALLAS — A few items from the lobby at the Winter Meetings:

*The Cardinals were scheduled to meet with Albert Pujols last night and this morning, but neither meeting came off. They are expected to meet later, but the Miami Marlins have reportedly offered a 10-year, $200 million deal. The Cardinals are contemplating whether to pass, and they just may.

* The White Sox traded reliever Sergio Santos to the Blue Jays for righthanded starter Nestor Molina. Santos will likely close for the Blue Jays, who have been busy, also acquiring catcher Jeff Mathis from the Angels earlier in the week.

*The Twins’ three-year, $25 million offer to Michael Cuddyer could take the Red Sox out of that running.

*Funny seeing Dennis Gilbert and Stan Kasten, two front men for different groups trying to buy the Dodgers having breakfast this morning. Both nice guys. Gilbert has a good group which includes Larry King while Stan Kasten has Magic Johnson. Frank McCourt, meanwhile has to be licking his chops. With about 10 groups involved the bidding could get as high as $1.5 billion.

*Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin was the well-deserved winner of Baseball America’s executive of the year.

*Former Dodger and long-time baseball man Jerry Royster spent a lot of time with Bobby Valentine last night. Seems to be in line to be a coach on the staff, perhaps the bench coach.

*You see ex-Red Sox guys everywhere. Aaron Sele and Bill Mueller are Dodger assistants to the front office. Mike Brown is a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dave Jauss is a Pirate major league scout. Bob Schaefer is a Washington special assistant. Andre Dawson works for the Marlins. Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod are Cubs.

*Great to see Bob Elliott of the Toronto win the Spink Award. He will be honored in Cooperstown.
