FORT MYERS, Fla. — By now you’ve heard that JetBlue Park has the same dimensions as Fenway Park, right down to the Green Monster.
But what maybe you didn’t know — or at least I didn’t — is that one of the practice fields does, too.
As you enter the back of the complex, the first field you come across is basically a chain-link Fenway. There’s a wall, a triangle in center and that deep right field.
How much sense does that make? If you’re going to prepare for the season while in Florida, you might as well get ready for playing all the angles back in Boston. That also should help minor leaguers along the way, especially outfielders.
The Red Sox also have a grass field roughly the size of a football field for stretching, running and agility drills.
That to WFAN’s iPhone app, I listened to an interview Bobby Valentine did with Mike Francesa about 45 minutes ago. They’re attending the Connecticut Sports Foundation charity dinner at Mohegan Sun.
Valentine said he was giving everybody a clean slate in regards to last season. But he also said that sometimes the best way to get a clean slate is to apologize for what you did. Outside of Jon Lester, that message hasn’t gotten through to many people yet.
Valentine also talked about how excited he was to get to spring training and to get in uniform again. He said he still has to pinch himself about being manager of the Sox.
Only time will tell whether Bobby V is the right man for the job. But his genuine enthusiasm for the gig is refreshing.
Jayson Stark of ESPN reports that Roy Oswalt is not going to sign with the Rangers or Phillies. That would seem to leave the Cardinals and Red Sox.
Oswalt has so far seemed intent on not signing with the Red Sox. But they could be the last open chair when the music stops for the veteran righthander.
