Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, general manager Jed Hoyer and senior vice president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod are former Red Sox employees as is director of media relations Peter Chase. Cubs manager Dale Sveum was the leading candidate to become manager of the Red Sox before his interview with the owners went poorly and Bobby Valentine emerged as the choice. … The Sox won two of three from the Marlins in Miami, but have dropped four of six overall. … The Sox are 17-13 on the road. … The teams are meeting at Wrigley for the first time since 2005 when the Cubs took two of three. … Matsuzaka is making his second start since coming back from Tommy John surgery. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings in his season debut against the Nationals on Saturday with one walk and eight strikeouts. Matsuzaka is 6-5, 4.20 in 13 career interleague starts. … With a victory, Matsuzaka will pick up his 50th career major league win…He would be the third Japanese-born pitcher to reach the mark, joining Hideo Nomo (123) and Tomo Ohka (51). … Dempster is 1-1, 7.13 in four career appearances against the Sox, the last coming in 2005.
Song of the Day: “Always A Friend” by Alejandro Escovedo.
