Notes: The Sox open a 10-game homestand, their longest of the season, with Buchholz on the mound. He is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last eight starts. Buchholz was rocked by the Tigers on April 8 in Detroit, giving up seven runs on eight hits in four innings. … Scherzer has won four of his last five starts and has a 2.81 ERA in that stretch. He faced the Sox on April 8 and allowed seven runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings. He is 1-2, 9.82 in five career starts against the Sox. … Aviles (turf toe) is out of the lineup for the second straight day. But there also is no keeping down Ciriaco, who is hitting .349/.359/.460 since being called up.
