A few pre-game notes from Fenway Park:
• RHP Scott Atchison was activated off the 60-day disabled list. No word on a corresponding move for the 40-man roster. But LHP Franklin Morales could be going on the 60-day DL as he seems to be done for the season.
Atchison is trying to pitch with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. He got through two minor league games and showed the same velocity and movement he did before the tear was detected.
“Scotty Atchison pitched as well as anybody on our team for the first nine weeks of the season,” Bobby Valentine said. “When they said that he might not pitch again, I looked in his eye and he said, ‘No, I’m going to pitch. This is easy.’ … It’s a credit to him as a person as well as him as a pitcher. He’s special.”
• The Sox will have a pre-game tribute to Joe Castiglione today. He is celebrating his 30th anniversary with the team.
• Jarrod Saltalamacchia is back in the lineup after missing three games with back spasms. He worked out before the game and said he felt fine. “It’s good. I think Salty’s going to finish strong. We get his bat in the lineup, he’s going to help us win some games,” Valentine said.
