Nick Cafardo had two pieces of news in the paper today:
• Jason Varitek will be taking a job with the Red Sox. It will probably not be as part of the major league coaching staff. “I will be involved in some way. We’re just putting the finishing touches on something and we’ll have it finalized soon,” Varitek said.
Varitek retired before this season. With four young children, he is looking for an opportunity to ease his way back into baseball while still having time for his family.
• Roger Clemens told Nick that he will not be pitching for the Houston Astros this season or next. Clemens had pitched a few games of independent league ball in Texas.
• Don’t miss the jacuzzi story told by Pedro Martinez last night.
• If you think the Red Sox are a mess, it’s nothing compared to Miami.
