FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox are awaiting MRI results on both of David Ortiz’ heels. The MRIs were conducted, according to manager John Farrell and Sox assistant general manager Mike Hazen, strictly for “precautionary reasons.”
Ortiz has had a problem with his left Achilles’ heel since last July. Lately, Ortiz has experienced soreness in his heel area after workouts. Two years ago ,he had soreness in his right heel, which is why the Red Sox wanted to take another look.
Farrell said he still hasn’t ruled out Ortiz being ready on time for Opening Day while Ortiz has said he needs at least 50 at-bats in the next three weeks to do it.
Ortiz could still get the necessary prep work with a combination of major league and minor league at-bats. If today’s MRIs are fine, he will likely begin moving closer to getting at-bats in game situations.
“The good news is that he is progressing,” Farrell said.
