Doubleheader report: Red Sox get a tie and win

SCORES: Red Sox 3, Orioles 3 (10 innings); Red Sox 5, Twins 0.

RECORD: 11-9-1.

BREAKDOWN: In the first game of a doubleheader, the Red Sox took the lead in the 10th inning but could not hold on in Sarasota. Juan Carlos Linares homered to give the Sox a 2-1 lead. But with two outs in the bottom of the inning, Oscar Villarreal allowed a single by Russ Canzler before Maine native Ryan Flaherty homered to right field. In the nightcap in Fort Myers, Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s two-run homer helped propel the Sox. He was 2 for 3. Felix Doubront pitched four scoreless innings.

THUMBS UP: Christian Vazquez did it again, throwing out Brian Roberts trying to steal second in the fifth inning. The 22-year-old catcher has thrown out all five runners trying to steal on him in spring training and had a pickoff. But he was optioned to Double A Portland after the game.

THUMBS DOWN: Ryan Lavarnway was 0 for 5 with a strikeout. He grounded into two double plays and left five men on base. Lavarnway is 4 for 30 in Grapefruit League games.

MEDICAL REPORT: Mitch Maier injured his left wrist in the second inning when he made a diving catch in left field to steal a hit from J.J. Hardy. He stayed in the game but felt more pain in his wrist when he was jammed by a fastball in the third inning and singled. He left the game after that. “I kind of jammed it and rolled it under me,” said Maier, who has hit .280 in camp. X-rays were negative but Maier has a sprain and is expected to miss at least a few days … Pedro Ciriaco was scratched from the second game lineup because of back spasms. Deven Marrero filled in. He played four innings in the first game and seven in the second.

AROUND THE BASES: John Lackey will pitch in a minor league game on Saturday rather than face the Tampa Bay Rays … Travis Shaw, a first baseman who hit .305 with a .957 OPS for Single A Salem last season, was 0 for 1 against the Orioles. The Red Sox will have Shaw play some more games at third base this season to increase his versatility. Shaw’s father, Jeff, and Farrell were teammates in 1990 with the Indians. … Salty is hitting .417 in the Grapefruit League.

NEXT GAME: Saturday at 1:05 p.m. against Tampa Bay at Port Charlotte. The Red Sox will start Alfredo Aceves. The Rays are starting Roberto Hernandez, the righthander once known as Fausto Carmona.
