Game over: Red Sox 3, Orioles 3 (10 innings): The Sox scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning, the second coming on a single by Ronald Bermudez. The Orioles then got a two-run homer by Ryan Flaherty, the pride of Maine.
So it’s a split-squad tie in extra innings. Twins at Sox tonight. Check back later.
Top of the 10th: Red Sox 2, Orioles 1: Juan Carlos Linares with a home run to center field off Clay Schrader to lead off the inning. That’s his second of the spring. The ball just kept carrying to center and evaded the leap of Travon Robinson.
Sox have two runners on. But off to the clubhouse. Back later.
Top of the 10th: Red Sox 1, Orioles 1: Chris Hernandez went 3.1 perfect innings before Oscar Villareal came out for the ninth. He walked the second batter he faced before a slow roller was tapped out in front of the plate. Vazquez jumped out from behind the plate and made a quick throw to first to get the runner. Villareal then got a strikeout to end the inning.
The teams will play one more inning regardless of the score.
Middle of the 8th: Red Sox 1, Orioles 1: Nice job by the second-tier Red Sox pitchers against a solid Orioles lineup. O’s have only five hits. But the Red Sox have only two.
Top of the 7th: Red Sox 1, Orioles 1: Both teams went in order. Chris Hernandez has retired all four batters he has faced for the Red Sox.
Mitch Maier just said that he jammed his left wrist making that diving catch in the second inning when it rolled under him. He also felt it when he singled on a pitch that jammed him. He left the game as a result and will get checked out later on.
The Orioles have subbed out most of their starters.
Top of the 6th: Red Sox 1, O’s 1: Brentz hit a long home run to left center off Luis Ayala. The Orioles tied it up when McLouth doubled and Roberts singled off Wilson.
Roberts was thrown out stealing by Christian Vazquez. Why are teams still running on him?
Top of the 5th: Sox 0, O’s 0: Bradley walked before Lavarnway grounded into a double play. Ross then walked, knocking Britton out of the game. But Zach Petersime got Gomez to fly out. Alex Wilson then put two runners on but escaped damage.
Mortensen went three scoreless innings.
Top of the 4th: Sox 0, O’s 0: Maier singled and Brentz reached on an error by Machado with one out. Holt grounded into a force at second before Iglesias flied deep to center. Mortensen walked McClouth with two outs before Roberts flied to center.
Top of the 3rd: Sox 0, O’s 0: Mitch Maier made a diving catch in left field to take a hit away from J.J. Hardy. He jammed his wrist but stayed in the game. Betemit then singled before Mortensen got Machado to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
The Sox have not reach reached base on Britton.
Top of the 2nd: Sox 0, O’s 0: Britton retired the Sox in order, although it took a terrific play by Machado to get Bradley. On a ball hit down the line, the third baseman ranged behind the bag and made a strong off-balance throw. Mortensen allowed a single by Brian Roberts but otherwise had no problems.
Pre-game: Welcome to Ed Smith Stadium and the first game of a split-squad doubleheader for the Red Sox.
There are no regulars in this lineup, but that’s great. It’s good to get a chance to see guys like Brock Holt, Jose Iglesias, Jackie Bradley Jr., Ryan Lavarnway and Bryce Brentz play extended innings.
All five of those guys could start the season in Pawtucket. But all five also could join the Red Sox at some point, too.
We’ll have updates all game long, so please hang out and feel free to leave your comments.
