Game over: Red Sox 5, Rays 1: Lester, Carter and Hanrahan took the perfect game for eight innings. Marco Duarte, a 26-year-old minor league journeyman, got one out in the ninth before Jason Bourgeois singled up the middle. A passed ball and a double by Figueroa scored a run.
Top of the 8th: Red Sox 5, Rays 0: Red Sox added a run as Jon Diaz reached second on a single and an error and scored on Overbay’s single.
Hanrahan coming in. Off to the clubhouse to speak to Lester.
Middle of the 7th: Red Sox 4, Rays 0: Anthony Carter retired the Rays in order. Sox pitchers are six outs away from perfection. Is that exciting? I guess so.
Top of the 7th: Red Sox 4, Rays 0: The Sox tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Napoli singled, Middlebrooks (who looks great of late) doubled and Gomes singled in two. He was 3 for 3 with four RBIs today.
Anthony Carter replaced Lester.
Lester’s line: 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 79 pitches, 53 K: This spring: 20 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 16 K.
Middle of the 6th: Red Sox 2, Rays 0: Red Sox are loving what they’re seeing from Lester. 18 up and 18 down on 79 pitches. That’s probably it for today for him.
Middle of the 5th: Red Sox 2, Rays 0: 15 up and 15 down for Lester with five strikeouts. He has been dominant. Only a few balls hit hard.
Top of the 5th: Red Sox 2, Rays 0: The Sox tacked on a run when Middlebrooks reached on a two-base error by Bourgeois in right field and Gomes doubled high off the wall. Ross walked to extend the inning before Iglesias fanned.
Top of the 5th: Red Sox 1, Rays 0: Lester has retired all 12 batters he has faced. Iglesias made a nice play on a line drive in the hole to end the top of the fourth.
Top 3rd: Red Sox 1, Rays 0: Another impressive 1-2-3 as Lester has now retired all nine batters and thrown 39 pitches, 28 for strikes.
Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 1, Rays 0: Will Middlebrooks with a two-out double and a Jonny Gomes single put Sox on the board vs. Cobb.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 0, Rays 0 – Lester retired the side again.
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 0, Rays 0: Alex Cobb easily got through Boston’s top of the order inducing ground outs by Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino and a called third strike to Dustin Pedroia.
Top 1st: Red Sox 0, Rays 0: Strong first inning for Jon Lester who struck out Kelly Johnson and Evan Longoria in a 1-2-3 first inning. He struck out Johnson
looking and got Longoria to swing and miss.
Pre-game: Good afternoon from JetBlue Park and today’s game between the Rays and Red Sox. It’s St. Paddy’s Day and the Sox have on green uniforms and caps. The bases are green, too.
Jon Lester will go 5-6 innings today and the lineup looks an awful lot like what we could see on Opening Day.
It’s beat writer day on NESN, too. So check out your favorite (well, hopefully) Globe writers on the broadcast.
We’ll have updates here, too.
