Top 9th: Pirates 4, Red Sox 3 – De La Cruz doubled to center and was driven in by Hazelbaker’s single.
Bottom 8th: Pirates 4, Red Sox 2 – Former Pawtucket catcher Mike McKenry homered against Oscar Villareal.
Bottom 7th: Pirates 3, Red Sox 2 – Gabby Sanchez blasted a two-run homer vs. Chris Carpenter after he walked Josh Harrison to put the Bucs on top.
Top 7th: Red Sox 2, Pirates 1 – Former Red Sox Mark Melancon, who was traded to the Pirates in the Joel Hanrahan deal, came on for the Pirates and had one of his typical innings. He struck out the first two Sox batters and then lost his command, allowing a basehit to Daniel Nava and walked Jackie Bradley before finally getting out of it when Jarrod Saltalamacchia grounded out.
Bottom 6th: Red Sox 2, Pirates 1 – Clay Buchholz is done after five, allowing one hit, one run. He threw 60 pitches, 38 strikes. Koji Uehara has come on in the sixth. Uehara had a runner on third but struck out Jose Tabata to get out of the inning.
Top 5th: Red Sox 2, Pirates 1 – Both pitchers have settled down nicely pitching in less than stellar conditions with a strong wind and rain in the air. The Sox have four hits – Victorino (triple), Bradley (infield single), Lavarnway (two-run single) and Nava (single).
Top 3rd: Red Sox 2, Pirates 1 – McDonald seems to be finding himself after a shaky first. He walked Ryan Lavarnway, but was able to retire the side.
Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 2, Pirates 1 – Clay Buchholz’ 9-1/3 inning scoreless string ended when Neil Walker homered on his first pitch of the second inning. Walker sent the drive to right field. It’s very windy here. Interesting to note: the Pirates have their pitcher hitting while the Red Sox are using a DH.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 2, Pirates 0 – Red Sox put a couple of baserunners on when Ryan Dent walked and Daniel Nava was hit with a James McDonald pitch, but the Sox couldn’t extend their lead. Shane Victorino struck out in the inning and Jackie Bradley Jr. grounded out to second base.
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 2, Pirates 0 – Clay Buchholz extended his scoreless streak to 9-1/3 innings. He walked Felix Pie with one out, but struck out Russell Martin and got Pedro Alvarez to ground out to first base.
Top 1st: Red Sox 2, Pirates 0 – After a 48-minute rain(less) delay, Ryan Lavarnway’s spring training just got better driving in two runs with a bases-loaded single to left field. Lavarnway, DHing, knocked in Shane Victorino, the leadoff hitter, who tripled to right against righthander James McDonald. Jackie Bradley Jr. reached on a high chop to shallow left for a hit. After Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked to load the bases, Lavarnway, hitting .152, made solid contact.
We’ve been in a rain delay (original starting time was 1:05 p.m.) and awaiting the start of the game. A front was heading through Bradenton, but it went South and except for a few sprinkles, it never rained that much. The tarp is off the field. The game is scheduled to start at 1:50 p.m.
