Game over: Red Sox 10, Rays 8 (14 innings): Franklin Morales allowed a single but got Escobar to ground into a double play to end a game that lasted five hours and 24 minutes.
Top 14th: Red Sox 10, Rays 8 – Red Sox broke it open on RBI singles by Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Shane Victorino singled and tagged up on a fly ball to right by Pedroia. He scored from there on Nava’s broken-bat single over shortstop.
Bottom 13th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – Franklin Morales has to come on, likely forgoing his Wednesday night start. He walked pinch-hitter Ryan Roberts but got out of the inning.
Top 13th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – Singles by Salty and Drew, but Middlebrooks grounded into a double play.
Bottom 12th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – Koji Uehara has retired six straight Rays batters. Franklin Morales is up in the Sox bullpen and appears to be the next pitcher which would likely end the idea of starting him on Wednesday.
Top 12th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – Red Sox go down in order. Cesar Ramos throws 12 warm-up pitches as Joe Maddon claims Kyle Farnsworth came out with an injury. Farrell challenges, but rebuffed by home plate umpire Tom Hallion.
Bottom 11th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – A 1-2-3 inning for Koji Uehara who had thrown 31 pitches in his outing on Sunday.
Top 11th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – Sox strand Jacoby Ellsbury at third after he walked and stole second and third base. Dustin Pedroia took a called third strike on a Kyle Farnsworth pitch on the outside corner.
Bottom 10th: Red Sox 8, Rays 8 – The Rays tied it off Andrew Bailey when Jose Lobaton homered and then two walks and single by Ben Zobrist loaded them up. Bailey walked Kelly Johnson to force in the tying run and then the Sox got a big 4-2-3 doubleplay. Sam Fuld tried to win it dragging a bunt with runners at second and third but it was snuffed out by Dustin Pedroia.
Top 10th: Red Sox 8, Rays 6 – Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s two-run single hitting lefthanded drove in Pedroia and Nava to give Boston their first runs since the first inning.
Bottom 9th: Red Sox 6, Rays 6 – James Loney singled with one out, but Clay Mortensen did a nice job retiring the side to keep the game tied.
Top 9th: Red Sox 6, Rays 6 – Fernando Rodney dominating striking out two in a 1-2-3 inning.
Bottom 8: Red Sox 6, Rays 6 – It seemed a matter of time before the Rays would come even in this game ans it happened here. A one-out double by Yuniel Escobar and advancement to third on a ground ball out set the stage for Junichi Tazawa wild pitch where Escobar slid under Tazawa’s tag to score the tying run. Aphenomenal catch by Dustin Pedroia on a pop up in no man’s land near the mound to end the inning.
Top 8th: Red Sox 6, Rays 5 – Jake McGee very tough, throwing 97 mph, strikes out two.
Bottom 7th: Red Sox 6, Rays 5 – James Loney hits a long homer off Andrew Miller.
Top 7th: Red Sox 6, Rays 4 – Dustin Pedroia walked against Joel Peralta, but Big Papi knocked into a double -play.
Bottom 6th: Red Sox 6, Rays 4 – Kelly Johnson struck out against Craig Breslow with runners in scoring position after Lackey hit Matt Joyce in the back with a pitch and emptied the dugouts for some pushing and shoving. After Lackey allowed a double to Ben Zobrist, Farrell took Lackey out for Breslow.
Top 6th: Red Sox 6, Rays 4 – Alex Torres gave up a two-out single to Jacoby Ellsbury, but that’s all.
Bottom 5th: Red Sox 6, Rays 4 – Lackey throws his first 1-2-3 inning to preserve a two-run lead.
Top 5th: Red Sox 6, Rays 4 – A very confident lefty Alex Torres comes on to replace Alex Cobb and strikes out the side while also allowing a single to Mike Carp.
Bottom 4th: Red Sox 6, Rays 4 – Chip, chip away. The Rays scored one on Ben Zobrist’s RBI single to left on a 3-2 pitch after Lobaton and Escobar started the inning with singles. Lackey was able to retire Evan Logoria with runners at second and third to end the inning.
Top 4th: Red Sox 6, Rays 3 – Cobb winds up striking out the side as Shane Victorino is stranded at third base following a walk, error on first baseman James Loney on a pickoff and and wild pitch by Cobb, who ended the inning with 98 pitches.
Bottom 3rd: Red Sox 6, Rays 3 – The Rays scored when they put Ben Zobrist (single) and Kelly Johnson (single) on base. The run eventually scored on a fielder’s choice by Luke Scott.
Top 3rd: Red Sox 6, Rays 2 – Cobb settles down, retired the Sox in order.
Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 6, Rays 2 – Rays get two runners on but can’t score against Lackey. Joyce hits a foul home run after taking Lackey deep in the first.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 6, Rays 2 – Cobb gets the first two outs and then walks two, but Mike Carp flew out to center.
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 6, Rays 2 – John Lackey serves up meatballs to leadoff hitter Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria – both homered – as the Rays cut the gap to four.
Top 1st: Red Sox 6, Rays 0 – What a beating the Red Sox gave Alex Cobb in the first inning. Six runs on seven hits.here were two-run hits by Dustin Pedroia and Mike Carp and RBI hits by Daniel Nava, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Will Middlebrooks as 10 Red Sox came to the plate.
