Game over: Red Sox 13, Yankees 9: The Red Sox have taken three straight with another offensive barrage including four homers, two by Mike Napoli. The Yankees trailed 12-3 at one time and then scored four runs in the sixth but it was too little too late.
Xander Bogaerts hit his first major league homer and had two hits and made a nice barehanded play in the field. Jonny Gomes also hit a three-run homer in the third. The game was played in 3:32 before a sellout 49,046 at Yankee Stadium.
Top 9th: Red Sox 13, Yankees 9 – Mike Napoli hits his second homer. he now has 21 with 85 RBI and is red hot.
Bottom 8th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 9 – Mark Reynolds, who replaced Derek Jeter in the lineup, doubled down the left field line past a diving Will Middelbrooks scoring J.R. Murphy and Brett Gardner. All the runs were scored against Drake Britton. Junichi Tazawa retired the final two batters to strand Reynolds at second base.
Top 8th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 7: Jonny Gomes was hit with a pitch by Brett Marshall, but that was all.
Bottom 7th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 7 – Drake Britton records a 1-2-3 inning.
Top 7th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 7 – Will Middlebrooks singled, his second of the game, took second on a pitch that got by catcher J.R. Murphy, but was stranded there as Bradley struck out and Lavarnway flew out deep to center.
Bottom 6th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 7 – The Yankees scored four times as Lackey walked Nunez and Ichiro, allowed a two-run double to Brett Gardner and RBI single to Robinson Cano. Matt Thornton, whose stuff has really deteriorated according to scouts at today’s game, allowed singles to Cano and Soriano, the second producing the fourth run.
Top 6th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 3 – An infield single by Dustin Pedroia, but he was erased by a 3-6-1 double-play.
Bottom 5th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 3 – Yanks go down in order. They look like a real beaten team.
Top 5th: Red Sox 12, Yankees 3 – Xander Bogaerts just had a few jaws drop. He stroked a two-run homer deep to leftcenter, a shot that had everyone in the Red Sox dugout looking on in awe. A budding Ernie Banks?
Bottom 4th: Red Sox 10, Yankees 3 – John Lackey can’t complain because of a lack of run support. He did allow a third run in the fourth when Eduardo Nunez started with a double to right and road home with a double by Ichiro. Brett Gardner was hit with a pitch, but Derek Jeter struck out to end the inning..
Top 4th: Red Sox 10, Yankees 2 – Another five-spot for the Red Sox who can not be stopped. Three straight hits by will Middlebrooks (single), Jackie Bradley Jr. (single) and an RBI double by Ryan Lavarnway got the first run in. Xander Bogaerts’ ground out scord the second run and Shane Victorino’s single to left scored the thrid run. Joe Girardi finally had to take David Huff out but Jim Miller was greeted with an RBI single by Gomes, a double by Pedroia and a sacrifice fly to deep center by David Ortiz scored the fifth run.
Bottom 3rd: Red Sox 5, Yankees 2 – Yanks get one back Brett Gardner singled and stole second and came in on Robinson Cano’s single to right.
Top 3rd: Red Sox 5, Yankees 1 – Jonny Gomes stroked a three-run homer on a hanging change-up by Huff. Xander Bogaerts started things off with a double to left and Shane Victorino was hit with a pitch. Later in the inning Ichiro made a sensational catch slamming against the right field wall on a well timed leap to rob David Ortiz of extra bases.
Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 2, Yankees 1 – Lackey walked Alfonso Soriano, who was oddly sacrificed to second by Curtis Granderson. Strange because it’s so early in the game and Granderson is a power hitter, After Eduardo Nunez struck out, Lyle Overbay singled to rightcenter to score Soriano. Lackey also gave up a single to Ichiro before Austin romine grounded out to end the inning.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 2, Yankees 0 – Mike Napoli’s hot streak continues as he homers (vs. Huff) on a towering shot to left with David Ortiz (double).
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0 – John Lackey gets two ground ball outs and then struck out Robinson Cano.
Top 1st: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0 – David Huff struck out Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes to start the game and the got Dustin Pedroia to ground out to second.
