Final: Baltimore 5, Boston 3 (12 innings)

Game over: Orioles 5, Red Sox 3: Well, the Red Sox may win this wild card berth and/or division one of these days, but one of these days wasn’t tonight. The Orioles keep fighting to stay alive in the wild card race and they’re doing a good job of it. The Orioles scored twice in the 12th on a bases loaded Chris Davis single vs. Franklin Morales. The game lasted 4:01 before 38,540.

Top 12th: Orioles 5, Red Sox 3: Chris Davis singled up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs off Franklin Morales to take the lead. Morales allowed singles to JJ Hardy and Brian Roberts before a wild pitch advanced the runners. The Red Sox walked pinch-hitter Steve Pearce intentionally to load the bases. Manny Machado fouled out to first base, before Davis came through, his 133rd and 134th RBI.


Bottom 11th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Lefty TJ McFarland came on for the Orioles. he allowed an infield single to Mike Carp on a ball Brian Roberts mishandled. Daniel Nava sacrificed the runner to second. After Will Middlebrooks was walked intentionally, Stephen Drew knocked into a double play. He’s now 0-for-7 with five strikeouts and a double play against McFarland.

Top 11th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3: Franklin Morales pitched a strong inning retiring Jones, Markakis and the Great Valencia. There were 38,540 here tonight including 4,000 bearded people. But about half have left this 3-3 game.

Bottom 10th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – A Shane Victorino single was erased by a David Ortiz 6-5-3 double-play after Big Papi battled Tommy Hunter to a 3-2 count. Napoli flew out to left. Victorino’s single was a blooper that fell into short center. It looked like a catchable ball for Adam Jones, but he seemed to give way to McLouth and neither got it.

Top 10th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Koji Uehara is back on track after allowing his first run in 30-1/3 innings Tuesday night. He faced the top of the Orioles order and got McLouth to line out to second, struck out Manny Machado and got Chris Davis, a player he was once traded for, to fly out to center field.


Bottom 9th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Will Middlebrooks began the inning off reliever Tommy Hunter with a single to right field. The Red Sox had struck out five times against Kevin Gausman in two innings but Hunter, also a hard thrower, retired the next three batters to send this one into extra innings.

Top 9th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Tazawa retired the Orioles in order.

Bottom 8th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Gausman again firing away with some intense high 90s heat. Gomes and Nava strike out in a 1-2-3 innings.

Top 8th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – The Red Sox went through Craig Breslow and onto Junichi Tazawa but they got out of the inning without allowing a run after Nick Markakis singled.

Bottom 7th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Kevin Gausman threw some gas at the Red Sox in the 7th with a pair of strikeouts, including a 99 mph fastball to retire David Ortiz with a strikeout.

Top 7th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Jake Peavy retired the side in what was probably his final inning after throwing 113 pitches in a quality outing.

Bottom 6th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 3 – Mike Napoli stroked a home run to centerfield off Chen, his 23rd, and 90th RBI to tie the score. After two outs Middlebrooks and Drew singled to continue the inning. That was all for Chen. In bound was Francisco (K-Rod) Rodriguez who retired David Ross with a grounder to shortstop after K-Rod nearly picked Middlebrooks off second base.

Top 6th: Orioles 3, Red Sox 2 – Peavy retired the first two batters and then the Orioles went to work. Nick Markakis singled, Danny Valencia singled and Matt Wieters stroked a ground rule double to right to score the go-ahead run.


Bottom 5th: Red Sox 2, Orioles 2 – Dustin Pedroia doubled off the wall with one out and made it as far as third base. But David Ortiz struck out swinging to end the threat.

Top 5th: Red Sox 2, Orioles 2 – Danny Valencia, who plays like he’s Mike Schmidt against the Red Sox, singled to lead off the inning against Peavy, who until this point had really been dealing. Matt Wieters stroked a double to the triangle scoring Valencia. After Hardy grounded out to short sending Wieters to third, Brian Roberts doubled him in to tie the game.

Bottom 4th: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – Chen had his first flawless inning retiring Nava, Middlebrooks and Drew.

Top 4th: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – The Orioles got their second baserunner when Peavy hit Adam Jones with a pitch. He advanced on a Peavy balk. That was the only glitch as Peavy continues to paint the corners with two more K’s. he’s got 7 through four innings.

Bottom 3rd: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – Nice Houdini work by Chen, who loaded the bases with nobody out and managed to get out of it with no runs scoring. Dustin Pedroia singled to center, Shane Victorino reached on a bunt single when Chen threw wide of first and David Ortiz singled off Chris Davis’ glove to load the bases. Mike Napoli ran the count to 3-2 before he lined out to shortstop. Jonny Gomes then knocked into a 1-2-3 double play as Chen escaped.

Top 3rd: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – The Orioles had their first baserunner when Brian Roberts walked with two outs, but here again Peavy got the strikeout on Nate McLouth to end the inning.

Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – After a Will Middlebrooks single to right, the Red Sox inning went downhill. Stephen Drew struck out and David Ross knocked into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double-play.

Top 2nd: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – Peavy has retired the first six batters, four of them with strikeouts.

Bottom 1st: Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 – David Ortiz hit a mammoth home run to right field with Shane Victorino (single to left field) aboard off of Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen. This ball was really smashed several rows into the rightfield grandstand between the foul pole and the Orioles bullpen. Jonny Gomes tried to extend the inning with a single to right, but in between, Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava struck out.

Top 1st: Red Sox 0, Orioles 0 – Jake Peavy started things off with a strong 1-2-3 inning started with a Nate McLouth called third strike.
