Game over: Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 3 The Red Sox have clinched the American League East division title with their 94th win tonight at Fenway before a sellout crowd of 37,215.
Jon Lester earned his 15th win, Koji Uehara his 20th save recording five outs to get the job done. The Red Sox broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles by David Ortiz and a two-run single by Mike Carp. Dustin Pedroia had three hits and an RBI, Carp drove in three runs.
The crowd began chanting “Koji! Koji!” after two outs were recorded and then “Let’s go Red Sox!” with Brett Lawrie up and Jose Reyes on base. Lawrie struck out sending the players flurrying out of the dugout to greet Uehara, who raced toward Saltalamacchia and jumped into his arms.
The players donned their American League East champion shirts as they celebrated near the mound.
Bottom 8th: Red Sox 6, Jays 3 – Will Middlebrooks singled, but Darren Oliver retired Drew and Bradley before Midlebrooks stole second. Pedroia then singled up the middle to score Middlebrooks with an insurance run.
Top 8th: Red Sox 5, Jays 3 – Junichi Tazawa allowed a double to Rajai Davis and a home run to Adam Lind to bring the Jays a bit closer. Koji Uehara had to relieve Tazawa with one out to save the day. He got DeRosa to fly out to center and after Gose reached on an infield hit, he struck out Arencibia to end the inning.
Bottom 7th: Red Sox 5, Jays 1 – Four straight singles – Bradley, Pedroia, Nava and Ortiz produce a run. After Napoli knocked into a 6-2-3 double-play, Mike Carp singled in two runs off reliever Jeremy Jeffress.
Top 7th: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1 – Lester pretty dominant. Likely done with 123 pitches.
Bottom 6th: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1 – A Jarrod Saltalamaccia double to left, on a ball Pillar took a strange route on, went for naught as Middlebrooks and Drew made outs to end the inning.
Top 6th: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1 – Lester struck out the final three batters after Kevin Pillar reached with an error.
Bottom 5th: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1 – Nava, Ortiz and Napoli go down as the Sox offense has sputtered the last couple of innings.
Top 5th: Red Sox 2,Jays 1 – After two were out, Davis singled, stole and third and scored on Brett Lawrie’s single to center. Lawrie was then caught stealing to end the threat.
Bottom 4th: Red Sox 2, Jays 0 – A single by Jackie Bradley Jr., was erased by a Dustin Pedroia inning-ending DP. John Farrell argued that the tag was missed on Bradley, but to no avail.
Top 4th: Red Sox 2, Jays 0 – This is why the Jays are the Jays. They loaded the bases after a walk to Kevin Pillar, Sierra reached on an error by Middlebrooks and DeRosa singled to left to load the bases and nobody out. But here Anthony Gose grounded to Middlebrooks right near the bag. Middlebrooks stepped on third and threw home where Pillar got caught in a rundown and was tagged out. Two outs, just like that. Arencibia struck out to end the inning.
Bottom 3rd: Red Sox 2, Jays 0 – Esmil Rogers really lost his composure here. He walked three straight batters after allowing a double to Daniel Nava with one out. MIke Carp walked with the bases loaded to force in Boston’s second run. Rogers left after 2-1/3 innings, issuing five walks and three hits and two runs. Chad Jenkins came on to retire Jarrod Saltalamacchia on a 3-6-1 double-play.
Top 3rd: Red Sox 1, Jays 0 – A leadoff single by Ryan Goins goes for naught when Lester retired the next three batters at the top of the Jays in order
Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 1, Jays 0 – Middlebrooks and Drew strikeout in a 1-2-3 inning for Esmil Rogers.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 1, Jays 0 – Jon Lester put two men on base when he walked Moises Sierra and allowed a single up the middle to Mark DeRosa. But he got out of the jam when he got Anthony Gose to ground into an fielder’s choice and Arencibia to strike out.
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 1, Jays 0 – Center fielder Colby Rasmus was injured when a stray ball from the Jays bullpen hit him in the face. He came out of the game before he even fielding his position. The Sox scored first when Dustin Pedroia, who doubled off the wall and advanced to third on a long fly ball to center, came in on a wild pitch. Ortiz and napoli walked and after Carp lined out for the second out, Saltalamacchia singled to center but Ortiz was thrown out at the plate.
Top 1st: Red Sox 0, Jays 0 – Jon Lester had a quick first inning against the top of the order, retiring Jose Reyes, Rajai Davis and Brett Lawrie.
