Game over: Orioles 6, Red Sox 5 – The Red Sox lost but clinched the best record in the American league with an Oakland A’s loss. The Red Sox rebounded a couple of times from deficits to take the lead, but the Os scored two in the 8th overcome the Red Sox for good. Jim Johnson struck out Jonny Gomes with Quintin Berry at second base to end the game. Daniel Nava led the Red Sox with four hits, Dustin Pedroia with three hits and an RBI. The game was played in 3:21 before 36,556 at Camden Yards.
Bottom 8th: Orioles 6, Red Sox 5 – A two-run double by Steve Pearce overtook the Red Sox. The hit came off Franklin Morales after Weiters and Valencia started the inning wih singles off Junichi Tazawa.
Top 8: Red Sox 5, Orioles 4 – Sox hold onto one run lead; can’t add on.
Bottom 7th: Red Sox 5, Orioles 4 – O’s can’t close the gap.
Top 7th: Red Sox 5, Orioles 4 – Stephen Drew and Dustin Pedroia were the table setters with singles and Gomes and Nava drove them both in.
Bottom 6th: Orioles 4, Red Sox 3 – John Farrell said he wanted to get Matt Thornton some work, likely to see if he should man a spot in the Sox pen for the postseason. Thornton had a 1-2-3 inning. Lester, by the way was out after five, throwing 97 pitches.
Top 6th: Orioles 4, Red Sox 3 – The inning began promising with a single by Nava and a double by Ross to pull Boston to within one run. Could have had more but Middlebrooks struck out and Victorino grounded out to first.
Bottom 5th: Orioles 4, Red Sox 2 – Singles by Hardy and Jones sandwiched a strikeout by Chris Davis. Wieters singled in Hardy and Valencia singled in Joines before Lester got a 6-4-3 DP ball from Markakis.
Top 5th: Orioles 2, Red Sox 2 – With one out, Stephen Drew stroked a double to right field and scored on Dustin Pedroia’s single to center.
Bottom 4th:Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 – A Nick Markakis single to lead off the inning went for naught as Lester buckled in and retired the next three batters.
Top 4th: Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 – Gomes reached on an infield single and moved up on Nava’s single to right. After Brandon Snyder struck out, David ross blooped s single to center to score Gomes.
Bottom 3rd: Orioles 2, Red Sox 0 – Brian Roberts homered. Lester walked two batters in the inning but limited the damage.
Top 3rd: Orioles 1, Red Sox 0 – The top of the Red Sox order tonight is Shane Victorino, Stephen Drew and Dustin Pedroia. They were retired by Chen.
Bottom 2nd: Orioles 1, Red Sox 0 – Lester secured the first two outs, but Nick Markakis started a rally by reaching on an infield hit to second base. Steve Pearce knocked him in with a double. David Ross committed a passed ball to advance Pearce to third, but Lester struck out rookie outfielder Jason Pridie.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 0, Orioles 0 – Daniel Nava led off the inning with a single, but Wei-Yin Chen retired the last three batters.
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 0, Orioles 0 – Have no idea how long Jon Lester will go now that the Red Sox have clinched the best record, but he allowed a single to JJ Hardy in the first inning but got out of it. It could be a 75-80-pitch game for Lester, who is likely to start Game 1 of the divisional series next Friday.
Top 1st: Red Sox 0, Mariners 0 – Before the end of the first inning, the Red Sox had captured the best record in the American League by virtue of Oakland’s 7-5 loss to Seattle. The Sox stranded two runners and didn’t matter.
