FORT MYERS, Fla. – David Ortiz has agreed to a one-year extension with the Red Sox worth about $16 million, a source close to the talks confirmed.
Ortiz had been seeking an extension since the offseason.
The deal, which kicks in in 2015 will match him with Mike Napoli as the highest paid Red Sox player for 2015. The deal is a raise over the $15 he makes this season.
Ortiz’ agent, Fernando Cuza, met with the Red Sox this afternoon and hammered it out with Ben Cherington and Larry Lucchino.
The hangup, even entering today’s talks, had been the raise. The Ortiz side was seeking for far more but settled for the modest increase.
The deal could be announced officially tomorrow. It is believed the contract includes vesting options for 2016 and ’17.
