SARASOTA, Fla. — It’s raining here at Ed Smith Stadium, home of the Baltimore Orioles. It’s not known yet whether the weather will jeopardize today’s game.
The Red Sox plan their David Ortiz press conference at noon today here. Ortiz agreed to terms on a one-year, $16 million extension Sunday. It includes two club options that could vest based on good health.
Ortiz had the fourth-best OPS in baseball last season (.959) behind Miguel Cabrera (1.078), Chris Davis (1.044) and Mike Trout (.988).
Ortiz is 2 for 35 with 12 strikeouts in spring training games this season, but doesn’t seem concerned.
In other news:
• Jake Peavy will pitch in a minor league game back in Fort Myers, while Drake Britton will start for the Red Sox against the Orioles.
• Grady Sizemore was scheduled to play in his second consecutive game, part of a three-day schedule weather-permitting, but instead he will take today off and play three straight starting Tuesday.
• The Orioles are still holding Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar, a third baseman taken from the Red Sox. Almanzar was taken originally to protect against Manny Machado likely starting the season on the disabled list.
Almanzar is hitting .200, but he’s second to Chris Davis on the Orioles with nine RBIs. The likelihood is he gets returned to the Red Sox, unless the teams can work out a deal where the Orioles can send him back to Triple A. The Red Sox have two young third basemen in Will Middlebrooks and Garin Cecchini.
• The Orioles traded former Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez as the Tigers continue to acquire every shortstop not named Stephen Drew.
