Red Sox to receive six cherry blossom trees from Japan as gift

Akira Muto, the Japanese Consul General in Boston, will present to the Red Sox Wednesday six grown cherry blossom trees that line the sidewalks on Yawkey Way and Van Ness Street.

The gift continues a tradition began in 2012 when the Red Sox received a cherry blossom tree to commemorate Fenway Park’s 100th anniversary and as a symbol of gratitude for the team’s assistance in helping victims of the March 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami.

The Red Sox Foundation raised and donated $1.3 million to the Japanese Red Cross after the disaster.
