Cecchini Called Up Today

Garin Cecchini was called up today, taking the roster spot of Alex Wilson, who was returned to Pawtucket after Saturday’s game against the Rays.

With Stephen Drew expected to be called up Monday, it could be a short stay for Cecchini, one of the Sox highly regarded prospects.

Cecchini is hitting .278/.354/.335 in 50 games for Pawtucket this season. In four minor league seasons, he is hitting a combined .307/.408/.440. He has played 48 games at third base for the PawSox, serving as the DH for two.
“Defensively, still a work in progress,” manager John Farrell said. “His at bats have been consistent, controlling the count, controlling the strike zone. I think he slept here overnight. He was here at 7 in the morning, I think, already dressed. He’s ready to go.
“He’s really a breath of fresh air. He’s a great kid. As we saw in spring training, loves the game, loves everything about it, and will always bring some added energy and life when he’s here
“We know what his background is. He’s comfortable in the dugout. It doesn’t matter who he’s talking with. There’s some similarities to Pedey and the way he interacts with people. He’s a breath of fresh air.”
Cecchini, 23, was a fourth-round pick by the Sox out of Alfred M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles, La., in 2010.
