BOSTON – Xander Bogaerts is not in the starting lineup Thursday night for the start of a four-game series against the Indians at Fenway Park. But it’s just a day off for Bogaerts, manager John Farrell said.
Bogaerts is batting .278 with a .367 on-base percentage and .422 slugging percentage. But he is in stretch of going 0 for his last 16 and 2 for his last 21.
“Feel like over the last four, five games see a little bit of maybe some fatigue in some at-bats that has been uncharacteristic for him,” Farrell said. “Some early-pitch outs, which is not the norm. Just felt like he could benefit from a day down.”
Farrell said he doesn’t’ believe Bogaerts is putting too much pressure on himself.
“No, I wouldn’t say that,” Farrell said. “The other night where he grounds into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded, there might have been a little bit of frustration at that moment because of what we’re living as a team. But to say that there are certain situations that you can visibly see it or he comes out of his swing or out of his mechanics in some way, no that’s not fair.
“We’re in a stretch of 38 games in 39 days so we’re rotating guys through as best we can to give a breather when needed. Xander’s got his breather today.”
