Several Red Sox Players Set to Start Rehab Assignments

Third baseman Will Middlebrooks and right-hander Clay Buchholz are scheduled to start rehab assignments Friday night with Triple-A Pawtucket. Middlebrooks has been on the disabled list since May 17 with a fractured right index finger, Buchholz since May 27 with a hyperextended left knee.

Buchholz is expected to throw five innings tonight.

Middlebrooks is expected to serve as the designated hitter tonight before getting into the field on Saturday. Sunday will be an off day for him.

Middlebrooks, who is on his second DL stint after missing 19 games from April 5-25 with a right calf strain, has struggled this season, batting just .197/.305/.324 in 21 games.
“He’s got to get some repetitions,” Farrell said. “He’s got to get back in the flow of things. It’s been quite a while since he’s been in a game. We don’t have a set time as far as ‘X’ number of at-bats, and he’s coming back to us. He’s got to go play. He’s got to hit and he’s got to get in the flow of things.”
“We’ve got a maximum of 20 day [on a rehab assignment for position players]. I’m not saying we’re going to use every day of that but we’ve got to get him going and get the right-handed power bat that we know and believe and trust is still there.”
Right fielder Shane Victorino, on the DL since May 24 with a right hamstring strain, is expected to begin his rehab assignment Saturday with Pawtucket.
Left-hander Felix Doubront, on the DL since May 21 with a left shoulder strain, is scheduled to make his third rehab start Sunday with Pawtucket.
