Ups & downs

A look at who’s up and who’s down from the Patriots’ 38-14 victory over the Jets:

Up

  • Tom Brady — Quarterback finishes 22 of 28 for 297 yards and three touchdowns. His passer rating was 146.6.
  • Ellis Hobbs — His 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown sets a new NFL record.
  • Randy Moss — Receiver makes it look easy, totaling nine catches for 183 yards and a touchdown.
  • Pass protection — Credit to the offensive line, tight ends, and running backs for keeping Tom Brady out of harm’s way. Brady was not sacked once.
  • Mike Vrabel — Outside linebacker totals seven tackles and 2.5 sacks, anchoring a strong defensive effort.

    Down

  • Matt Cassel — Backup quarterback could not handle the snap on Stephen Gostowski’s 43-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.
  • Asante Samuel — Cornerback was in man-to-man coverage as Laveranues Coles hauled in a 1-yard touchdown grab in the third quarter. More plays were made to his side of the field.
  • Junior Seau — Called a timeout in the second quarter when the Patriots did not have any timeouts to use.

MONDAY PLAN: Patriots coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold a press conference at 11:45 a.m. The media will have access to the locker room at 3:30 p.m. In the morning, we’ll plan on breaking down the personnel groupings the Patriots used in the win over the Jets, then we’ll report later in the day from Gillette Stadium.
