Denver-based reaction to hiring of Josh McDaniels

A sampling of reaction from Denver on the Broncos’ hiring of Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their head coach:

  • Woody Paige of the Denver Post — in a piece headlined “It’s wait and see with McKid” — is going to let this one sink in before he passes judgment.

“Is McDaniels the answer? There will be questions for quite a while. This crucial decision must be absorbed, considered and critiqued for several days. The final analysis will not be made for several years. This we do know: McDaniels will become the first head coach of one of the four major professional teams in Denver to be carded at LoDo bars. He looks like a college student.”

  • Dave Krieger of the Rocky Mountain News writes that owner Pat Bowlen must have had former coach Mike Shanahan on his mind with the hire.

“This seems a fairly transparent attempt by Bowlen to recreate the magic of the Shanahan hire – the smart young offensive mind brought in to coach up the latest rocket man at quarterback.”

  • Also in the Rocky Mountain News, Sam Adams sees similarities between McDaniels and a different coach.

“McDaniels played football at John Carroll University. He coached on an NFL team that finished a regular season with an undefeated record. He has coached on teams that have won Super Bowls in consecutive seasons. His first NFL head-coaching job is for a team who takes its nickname from a horse. See, McDaniels seems to be following the path of Hall of Famer Don Shula. … The Baltimore Colts hired Shula, at age 33, to replace Weeb Eubank.”

  • Back in the Denver Post, Mark Kiszla asks the question: Does age matter?

“It didn’t to John Madden, who became coach of the Oakland Raiders at age 32. And youth proved no hindrance to Don Shula, hired by the Baltimore Colts at 33. Both men matured gracefully enough to end up on the steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

  • Broncos players, including Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall, seem excited by the news, the Rocky Mountain News reports.

“Oh, man, I think that’s going to be great,” Marshall said. “Our locker room definitely has changed from a very veteran team to young guys with good character, but at the end of the day, still young. And from that standpoint, to have a coach in there around the same age as the guys in the locker room, he can relate to things we’re about; it makes it a little easier as far as the transition. A lot of the guys are excited.”

  • David Ramsey of the Colorado Springs Gazette believes owner Pat Bowlen is rolling the dice with McDaniels.

“Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is taking a risk, a big one, on McDaniels. The Broncos new commander is a mere 32 and has enjoyed a blessed football life on the New England Patriots coaching staff. Is McDaniels an offensive genius? Or was he just lucky to stand on the same sideline with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick? We’ll know soon enough.”

  • The Denver Post gathered fan reaction from a local sports bar, and the reaction was mixed.
