Source: Welker believed to have torn ACL, MCL

According to a source, the initial prognosis on Patriots WR Wes Welker is that he tore his left ACL and MCL this afternoon.

That is the injury that Tom Brady suffered during last year’s season opener.

While timetables vary on these types of injuries, it’s typically a 6-12 month rehab process. So after further tests tomorrow, Welker will go on injured reserve and undergo reconstructive surgery as soon as the swelling in the knee goes down.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the news.
