Brown hired as Patriots’ assistant coach

Corwin Brown, the former defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, has been hired to be an assistant coach for defense, the Globe’s Adam Kilgore has confirmed with a team source.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news in an appearance Friday morning on the WEEI radio station and via Twitter.

Brown, a defensive back who was the Patriots’ fourth-round draft pick in 1993, was defensive backs coach for the Jets from 2004 to 2006. He also coached at the University of Virginia as special teams coach from 2001 to 2003.

Brown played eight seasons in the NFL, including 1997 and 1998 when he played for Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who was then an assistant on Bill Parcells’ staff. He played college football at Michigan, where his teams won four Big Ten conference championships.
