Since the Patriots once came close to signing him before, free-agent WR Derrick Mason has been seen through the first week of free agency as a potential New England target.
Forget about that now.
The Ravens announced tonight that they’ve re-signed the 36-year-old Mason, even after overhauling the position with Donte’ Stallworth and Anquan Boldin. So what’s left? Good question … Josh Reed’s still there, but after meeting with the Patriots on Monday, no deal’s been done yet.
And after that, you’ve got some big names like Terrell Owens and Laveranues Coles who don’t have a whole lot left, and a flush market of playmaking RFAs (Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards) with prohibitive draft-pick compensation attached to them (first- and third-round picks).
In other words, it really might be Reed or bust, as far as adding a veteran presence at receiver. So you might want to start looking at college guys like Golden Tate and Damian Williams a little closer.
